From Einstein to Ouspensky

If we are to come to a true understanding of the nature of the laws of the universe, there has to be a reconciliation between physics and metaphysics. The reality of the existence of our minds must be integrated into the structure of the space/time continuum. Synchronistic phenomena, according to Carl Jung, display a connecting principle between inner mental images and outer physical events that transcends the normal concepts of space and time. Using a psychoanalytic model, the following monographs will describe and analyze documented examples of synchronicity, telepathy and precognition in relationship to theories based upon a hyperspatial paradigms and one of multi dimensional time.

The ancients believed that oracles could read the future; in modern times we use statistical models, surveys and satellite photos. Thus, to some extent, according to this premise, the future already exists in the present. In some cases, as in the movement and future position of the planets, the future is, essentially, a certainty. In other cases, the future exists in terms of probabilities.

The fact that humans can project into the future presupposes a dimension of time not truly handled by the current four-dimensional model. The realm of probable futures, therefore, exists in a fifth hyperspatial dimension accessed by, and/or identical to the mind and all of its substrata, e.g., conscious, preconscious, unconscious, collective unconscious. Just as all physical actions of human existence derive from inner ideation, all physical events first exist as potentialities; all are connected in inner/hyperspace. Among others, the paper will synthesize ideas from such theoreticians as Freud, Jung, Kammerer, Persinger, Saltmarsh, Dunne, Steiner and Ouspensky.

THE PHILOSOPHERS OF HISTORY
The advent of the industrial revolution caused a corresponding alteration in the philosophy of the day. Just as the scientific method was used to uncover natural laws and to create a new technology, so did the same thought patterns cause 17th, 18th and 19th century philosophers to attempt to analyze and predict human nature. Was some abstract divine spirit responsible for the fate of nations, or were individual leaders responsible? Was the new technology the product of human ingenuity or was it also the manifestation of a deeper evolutionary process? As Aristotle proposed, is their an underlying purpose to the universe, or is it simply a chance process?

If history is subject to some natural law, perhaps in some way this “law” may also be linked to process that governs the movement and placement of the planets. Or does freedom of the will place human existence in a realm not subject to natural law? These were some of the questions raised by the forerunners of the new field of psychohistory in its attempts to predict and even control social phenomena. The history of psychohistory is an eclectic journey; for, although it emphasizes psychoanalytic investigation of historical figures, the field also considers philosophical and sociological inquiry into the nature of the historical process and the underlying basis for human motivation.

Consciousness & The Anthropic Principle

Such properties as awareness, purposeful action, organization, design, and even decision making are inherent not only in our minds, but also within the structure of matter. Consciousness as an attribute of the cosmos lies on a continuum. Human consciousness, according to the theory, is hierarchically determined. At the lower end is mechanical behavior. At the higher end is increased intentionality and cognitive interaction with the unconscious realm of primordial mind. With the realization that consciousness permeates matter, theories on evolution, cosmology and mind/brain interactions are seen in a new light.

5-Dimensional Universe

A full description of our environment, called by the physicist the space/time continuum, generally ignores the realm of mind. Phenomena such as synchronicity, telepathy and precognition are also ignored. This paper has been an attempt to present evidence that synchronistic events and precognitive experiences are actual phenomena. Naturally, this paper has also argued that a realm for the mind exists. The fact that humans can project into the future presupposes a dimension of time not truly handled by the current four-dimensional model. By suggesting that just as there is an outer physical world, there is also an inner mental world, and by viewing these concepts spatially, a five-dimensional mind/space/time model has been developed. The extra dimension extends inward into inner space. It has been called by Steiner and Whicher (1971) counterspace, and by Rucker (1977) hyperspace. It is also the realm of the mind and thus structured in such a way that is compatible with both the Freudian and Jungian models. Synchronistic phenomena can therefore be explained by the utilization of a fourth spatial dimension for the simple reason that all physical objects are connected in special ways in hyperspace, the realm of existence that can become manifest in the outer three dimension (in "time").

The hyperspatial realm, since it proceeds inwardly, can also contain an infinite number of possible futures existing as probabilities. Some of the future probabilities that actually manifest later on the physical plane can be recognized before they occur physically simply because they exist, as potentialities in this space which also houses our minds. The final model for the space/time/mind continuum would contain three spatial dimensions, one mental (or hyperspatial or inner spatial dimension) and one dimension for time.

The realm of hyperspace, containing the seeds of all future probabilities can also be thought of as the second dimension of time (Dunne, 1929, Saltmarsh, 1938 and Ouspensky, 1971). However, these probable futures do not necessarily have to become manifest on the physical plane.

A brief reflection on the structure of everyday events reveals that all planned human activity is first initiated by thought. The realm for plans, goals and fantasies exists in this dimension called mind. Thus by giving this realm a "space" it can now be linked to the physical space/time continuum.

Thus, in order to explain bizarre coincidences such at the Titan/Titanic episode, one could speculate that the future already existed in the realm of inner or hyperspace as a probable future. Various factors such as initiating archetypes, telepathic and other psychic activity and even chance also played a part in the manifestation of the various events in question.

Beneath the surface of physical reality is the realm of inner space. It is structured in a lawful way quite different than three-dimensional space. One of its principles is compatible with the holographic model in that somehow the totality of hyperspace (called by Jung, the collective psyche) permeates all levels of physical space at all times at once (Seifer, 1979). One cannot view this statement with a three-dimensional logic. For want of a better term we could call the inner realm the mind of God.

In any case, events which occur in the realm of mind do not necessarily manifest themselves on the physical plane. One probable future which did not occur was the assassination of Ronald Reagan (March, 1981). In Hinkley's mind (the assailant), the president was going to die. And to that extent, Reagan was already dead as one of a number of possible futures. Fortunately, this probable future did not become manifest, but it did play out its existence in the inner planes.

In the case of large order synchronistic experiences, precognition being a form of synchronicity, by allowing a substratum of mind to permeate the space/time continuum, Jung's initiating archetypes now have a space in which to operate. This is because besides each individual mind, there is a mental counterpart of the very structure of our space/time environment. It seems to me, that the realization of this hyperspatial realm (as a mental domain) is the next step to any comprehensive theory on the structure of the universe.

To summarize: if synchronicity and precognition are actual occurrences involving natural law, then the theory that the mind exists as a primary dimension underlying physical events is a viable one worthy of deeper investigation. Such a premise will eventually show that only a relationship of hyperspatial realms to synchronicity, precognition and the structure of time, but also the relationship of these variables to other factors involved in the creation of the space/time continuum
